7 Days of Outfits: Late Summer

August 8, 2017

Is it just me, or does it suddenly feel like late summer? Maybe it’s because my kids go back to school this month and I see the span of our free time shrinking. Maybe it’s because we’ve been in summer for a solid six weeks now, and are riding a legit heat wave. Either way, I feel like I’m staring down the barrel at the end of summer and I don’t like it.

Luzon Tie Top, c/o Only Child | Skirt, Steven Allen via Crossroads (similar / similar) | Birkenstocks | Bag, Madewell (responsibly made option)

I had to get ready in about 8 minutes flat today (mostly due to lingering too long around my coffee), so it was grab, grab go. But later, when I brought my husband lunch, he kept complimenting me on how I looked, which was really nice to hear, considering my ultra minimal efforts. As always, it reminds me how having a well-curated closet truly makes getting dressed easy.

Effortless Factor: 10

Blank Canvas Top, c/o Jamie + the Jones | Shorts, thrifted | Sarita Wedge Sandals, c/o Nisolo | Half Moon Pendant, c/o Claus Jewelry

It’s hard to turn down the chance to give yourself extra long legs, so I took the bait and wore my Nisolo wedge sandals with shorts. However, I’m not really loving this look. The shorts are throwing it for me. I thrifted them a few months ago, they’re pretty retro, and I don’t think the pleats do me any favors, time to move them on!

Effortless Factor: 6, These shoes are a little fancy for my ‘everyday’ life, and I didn’t like my bunchy shorts.

Linen Dress, Everlane | Sandals, Birkenstock | Bag, Madewell (responsibly made option)

Today I spent loads of time at the pool (the morning for lessons and the afternoon for fun) so casual-humpday it was! No time to do hair or makeup, etc, etc. Just a little summer playtime. It turns out this dress doubles as a great swimsuit coverup! Also, a note on fit. Fresh out the package, it felt a little snug, and I was unsure at first. But Paige advised me that it loosens up, and it sure does! It’s much more comfortable now, and less body con.

On a side note, the vampire bite on my chest? It’s from my son, who did it in his sleep. So strange, right?!

Effortless Factor – 10

One of the really nice perks of being a blogger – or influencer, as the industry term goes – is that cool people who make beautiful things invite you to share their goods with your audience. Sometimes I work with big companies with marketing budgets, and sometimes I work with small owner-operated businesses who don’t even use the word marketing. I always choose carefully who I work with, ensuring their ethics and aesthetics align with mine.

Today I’m honored to share my pieces from Claus jewelry with you. I posted my necklace on Instagram last week (you can also see it above in Tuesday’s outfit), and you can see the Arch Hoops above. They are simple, and ultra lightweight (a must for me + dangly earrings) and made from recycled materials. Erin Claus’s minimalist aesthetic is one you won’t soon forget, just like the signet rings she’s known for. I hope you’ll check out Claus Jewelry.

Styling Notes: I love the simplicity of this outfit. Also, I’m wearing shorts, and I don’t feel like a kid (like I unfortunately did on Saturday). I think the sleek sandals and silky blue shirt are a nice contrast to the old, broken-in shorts. And speaking of broken-in, these sandals finally feel really good! It only took me two years to break them in. The leather on these, both the straps and soles, is thick. And it’s finally molded to my feet and feeling nice and comfortable!

Effortless Factor – 10

Hackwith Design House Shift Dress (size: M) (it’s reversible!), currently 30% off! | Sandals, old Everlane (similar / similar) | Bag, Madewell (responsibly made option)

For some reason I kept pushing past this dress in my closet, thinking it was too ‘dressy’ for weekdays. Turns out, I am way wrong. This was my favorite outfit from the week. The simple, shift style of this dress is one of my favorite silhouettes to wear. I just feel so cool without the effort to get there. And I was literally cool too! Ha!

Effortless Factor – 10

Shirt, old J.Crew | Shorts, old Anthro | Shoes, Pons (in Tan) | Bag, Madewell (responsibly made option)

Nope. Can I rewind? 🙅 This outfit is not working for me. I didn’t like it when I wore it, I don’t like it in the pictures. It just doesn’t feel like me. Not to mention those short-shorts, not my style either. I would have been better off with a linen dress again. I was feeling a little bored with my summer clothes and pulled these shorts out of the archives, and out of the house they will go. I had a good run with them, but now they must move on.

Effortless Factor: Not even gonna…

Hackwith Design House Wide Leg Jumper (size: S) currently 30% off! | Shoes, Pons (in Tan) | Bag, Madewell (responsibly made option)

Ah, much better. You had me at black and jumpsuit. Two of my favorite things. I’ve been wearing my REIFhaus jumpsuit a lot lately, and it was nice to don this one instead. It’s soft, swishy, and a compliment-magnet. I loved wearing this outfit. And I spent plenty of time on the floor with grubby toddlers (duty calls at church) and this jumpsuit was perfect for the job. It’s sturdy, moves with me as I play on the floor, and then afterwards I can toss it in the hamper for mindless machine washing. No fuss here.

Effortless Factor: 9 – I had to untie my sash when using the restroom.

Love this series, such a nice balance between style and reflection. Would you mind sharing more about how you’re doing such lovely photography for this series, seemingly on the daily? Is it all tripod/self portrait, or do you have a photographer friend helping out a bit?

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:53 pm

Hi Jess, thank you for the nice comment! Yes, I photograph these outfits daily as I wear them! I have a tripod and my camera has an interval-timer mode. So I set it up and then I hit go on it to take a series of shots, till I get one I like. ;) Two big factors that help my photos: natural light, (basically, I position myself to face windows) and editing. I quick-process my photos using presets in Lightroom. I hope that helps! Ask me anything else you’d like to know, I love talking photography!

I love Monday and Fridays, although you make all of them look great. I’ve had several misses with thrifted items this year. I hate the wasted dollars, but am glad is was a minimal cost because they were thrifted. Sometimes you don’t really know if something will work until you’ve worn it once or twice. The Claus jewelry is awesome! I have a local shop here who has similar looking jewelry and have bought a few pieces and LOVE them. The fact that they are local and and a small business makes it all the better! Also…. August always feels like late summer to me, too. Even though we have 5 more weeks of summer left, the end for me is when school starts. I’m ready for fall!!

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:55 pm

Hi Rebecca! Agreed, on the fewer wasted dollars. It can be hard to know what’s going to work out. That’s why I wait forever if I am going to drop significant money on an item. Excited for your schooling, I’d love to hear more about how that’s going!

Thursday takes the cake for me! Just FYI, those Everlane sandals are still lingering, but only in Navy and only in a few sizes: https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-slingback-sandal-navy

The black LA sandal is still hanging in there too (limited sizes as well): https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-sandal-black?collection=summer-sandal

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:57 pm

Thanks Krystal! And all those items I’ve had in my closet for 2-3 years! Thanks for the tip on the sandals! I loved reading about your cleans BTW ;)

I love the blue of that tank top! I shy away from “minimal colors” even as I try to minimize my wardrobe, so I love seeing bright colors on other people too. My theory is… if I buy everything in blue, purple, or pink, at some point it will all coordinate, right? :p

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:58 pm

HAHAHA Anne! That’s how I am with white and decorating. I bet your colorful wardrobe coordinates beautifully!

  • Lindsey August 8, 2017 at 10:04 am

Andrea, this post seriously made my day – thank you. I feel like at the temperature extremes I don’t have a lot of outfit options, so I tend to wear stuff I kind of hate from 2008 because I don’t have anything else. And I hate my outfit but I wear it because there is nothing else that will meet the temperature requirements. I’m glad to know that even style influencers struggle when Portland hits 100 :) Thanks for being real.

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:47 pm

Thank you for the comment Lindsey, it makes ME feel better to know I’m not the only one either! >< Thankfully a cool down is on our horizon. Have you been getting good use out of that (ultra cute) Esby jumpsuit?

      • Lindsey August 9, 2017 at 5:31 pm

You are too good, girl, to remember me praising that jumpsuit! I’ve gotten moderate use out of it – I would say once every other week. I wish it was more, but I would need a more *glamorous* job! I really like wearing the V in front for hot days – keeps me cool. I like the V in back when I’m trying to be more appropriate, like church!

        • Andrea August 9, 2017 at 10:21 pm

HAHA! You don’t want to wear it to work?!?! >< What do you wear, anyway? Love that you are at least wearing it every other week. Hopefully it will serve you for years to come! I love the fabric they use.

  • Mamavalveeta03 August 8, 2017 at 10:55 am

Your hair looks SO great in the pic with the bright blue tank and shorts! Did you curl it or is it natural?
I love your HDH Jumpsuit and the Claus earrings…on my radar!!!

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:48 pm

Ah, thanks girl!! I just got it cut a few days prior, so that definitely helped! My hair is mostly straight, but I like to use a curling wand in a few places to give it some movement. :)

I am seriously loving that jumpsuit! And I think saturday looks great – it’s so interesting how we look fine to others but have specific styles we feel more comfortable in. I personally relate most with Sunday because I always feel extra cool and put together in one-piece outfits, which is now making me feel sad for fall/winter coming!

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:50 pm

I love one-piece outfits too! But I STRUGGLE to make them work in cold weather. Where is the thick and cozy jumpsuit when we need it? Perhaps we will find one this fall!

  • Brenda August 8, 2017 at 11:45 am

Must. Have. That. Hackwith. Dress!!! Sooooo cute!!!! Love all these outfits!

    • Andrea August 8, 2017 at 9:49 pm

Right? And it’s kind of a steal right now!! I am planning to wear it again this week!

  • Erin August 9, 2017 at 12:17 am

That tank + shorts combo looks so breezy and carefree — and you look so happy and comfortable in your own skin! These are some of my favorite posts of yours.

    • Andrea August 9, 2017 at 10:19 pm

Thank you Erin! These are some of my favorite posts to publish. :) As always, I appreciate your feedback!

  • Karen August 9, 2017 at 2:46 pm

Hi! What size are you wearing in the Hackwithbwide leg jumper? I had a similar piece in college (earns ago) and that jumper is calling to me with the ways it could be styled!

    • Andrea August 9, 2017 at 10:20 pm

Hi Karen! I have the small! I’m 5’7, size 6, and i think I could have gone with a S or M. It’s a little snug (around my neck) when I put it on in reverse.
