Everlane’s Take on the Wide Leg Crop

February 14, 2017

Ever since the rise of the Kamm Pants, wide leg pants have been cropping up everywhere. At least that’s my take on how it’s all gone down. A few seasons back culottes were all the rage, but those have slipped from the scene to be replaced with a slightly more structured silhouette: the wide leg crop. I think it’s risen in popularity because it’s such a flattering shape. If done right, it creates an instant hour glass shape on almost anyone who wears it. Think of wide leg crops as the a-line version of pants.

There are several great options out there. Almost all of my favorite designers have done one in recent seasons. Esby’s apparel’s Val Pant comes in the prettiest color I’ve seen. The Denim Crop by M.Martin was the pair that convinced me I needed this shape in my wardrobe. I spotted them at WM Goods and was struck by how timeless the style is. Eventually I ended up with a pair of wide leg crops by Lauren Winter, which have made many appearances on the blog. I chose them for the comfort factor, the elastic waist is hard to beat, especially when you’re wearing pants a little bit higher than your hips. I’ve eyed the amazing, holy grail of wide crops, the Kamm Pants, and I haven’t gone for the investment because I’m just not sure how comfortable they’d be (feel free to weigh in if you have them!). Too many times in the past I’ve chosen style over comfort and then, you guessed it, that item collected dust in my closet.

Today Everlane released their take on the wide leg crop silhouette, and I’ve got to tell you, it’s pretty damn good. I was doubtful, I’ve never worn Everlane pants before and I was worried they’d run small and give me the dreaded muffin top. (Sorry if that’s TMI, no matter how fit you are, after kids there are just some things about your stomach that seem rearranged.) The minute I put these on I knew they were good. They are made from a thick twill, cotton fabric that has a touch of stretch giving me the perfect fit on my hips that I want in pants like these without sacrificing comfort.

Everlane kindly sent me this pair to review for you guys, and I am having a hard time convincing myself I don’t need a pair in bone as well. I’m wearing ‘washed black’ in my normal size 6, and they fit very comfortably. I look forward to styling them again with a distressed tee, a chunky cardigan and, of course, clogs.

What do you guys think? Are you into this silhouette for pants? I don’t even know if I did them justice with my photography, they look really great in person. I am making the prediction that at the price point they’re offered by Everlane, they will sell out fast.

Yes! So glad you like them. I have had these on my wishlist since I saw them in the Coming Soon section. I’ve also lusted after the Kamm pants, but I can’t bring myself to spend that much. These look so so good on you, and super flattering! I ordered both bone and black and canNOT wait to get them!

Thanks Mel! I love the Bone option, it’s so good. Excited for you to get yours!

I really like this look and you and love the pants. I had a pair of similar structured pants back in 2003 that I loved, although back then I was a size 2, so pretty much anything looked good. Not sure how these would look on my fuller figure now, but love the look on others. There has been several Everlane pants I’ve wanted to try, but hesitate because I hate buying pants online. I know they have a good return policy, so I should probably just pull the trigger.

Hey girl!! I had similar pants too around the same time frame! Mine were light blue and from the Gap. I always loved how I felt in them. Everlane is touting these as looking good in several body types, perhaps you should give them a try! I like the blue color quite a bit!

These fit you so well! I’m impressed. I assumed that Everlane pants wouldn’t allow for hips.

Ha!! You crack me up! I love how good they make booties look.

They look amazing on you!! 😍 I’m saving for a pair of black Kamm pants but I kinda want a pair of these in bone too…

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:28 pm

Ah, thanks Emily! I want to hear about your Kamm pants after you get them!

  • Reply natalie February 14, 2017 at 10:38 am

I LOVE THEM. I want them. Got to have them. And I don’t say that about much. I know I want black. Now to decide on the size… At least their return/exchange process is easy breasy in case I need to swap one size for another.

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:28 pm

You could always order two sizes and return whichever doesn’t work…

  • Reply Lo February 14, 2017 at 12:21 pm

Cuuuuuuute. They look very butt-friendly. ;)

      Suuuuuuper butt friendly!

  • Reply Kerstin February 14, 2017 at 12:26 pm

What is the rise on these? It’s not listed on their website…

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:29 pm

Kerstin, mine go up to my belly button. I’ll try to measure them later today!

They look great! I know you’ve mentioned it before, but I’m so glad to see the pants trend veering toward the looser side these days. I love my skinnies but I’m just sort of over it- especially as I’m nearing the end of my pregnancy and only want to wear comfy, relaxed looking clothing without having to sacrifice style. Question: how do you find these run as far as fit?

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:30 pm

I hear ya. The loose pant is refreshing! I find these run true to size, maybe even a slight bit generous.

Congratulations on your little one to come!

    This makes me so happy!
I’ve had the Kamm Pants on my wishlist for a while but don’t really have the budget for them right now, so these are the perfect alternative (and I may even be able to order 2 different colors :)

I love how you styled them and love the new set-up for your look pictures (and totally thought that I was looking at an Unfancy post before my eyes focused again :D )

Ha! Thanks Chloe! I’m hoping to keep mixing up my photo set up now that I live somewhere that’s not wall-to-wall carpet. Have you tried on the Kamm pants? I’m curious how they feel.

  • Reply Michele Ann February 14, 2017 at 7:50 pm

I’m glad you’ve reviewed these! I’m also a size six but I’m only 4”11. I’m a bit worried they’ll not actually be cropped on me and I may have to get them hemmed. They look fantastic on you. I am putting these on my wishlist!

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:33 pm

Hi Michele! Perhaps you could have them hemmed? I know Grechen (over at Grechen’s closet) is planning to do that.

  • Reply Megan February 14, 2017 at 8:48 pm

I reallllly want to try these but am so afraid that wide leg pants will drown my 5″2 height out. But at that price point, not a big risk and could always return them I guess. Hmmmm. Everlane sizing is always a bit tricky for me. I’m usually a 27/28 in jeans, but curvier on the bottom… always find jeans gap in the back at the back… but thinking I’d go with a 6 like you did. Any advice? These look amazing on you. I cropped my flares and just don’t know how I feel about them either which way but maybe the whole wide leg thing will be easier to embrace. ha! Having a hard time letting go of the skinny jeans silhouette.

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:36 pm

Megan, just be sure to wear what you love! That’s the most important thing, who cares about trends. ;) That’s a tough call on the sizing! I think these pants stretch well. But you could always get the 6, and have the waist darted if it gaps on you. I believe Lee (Style Bee) mentioned she was going to do that.

      • Reply Megan February 15, 2017 at 6:19 pm

Thanks for your reply! Ah, yeah, I hadn’t even thought of that. I always forget about tailoring! As someone else said above, I was quite resistant to the skinny jeans initially so this new silhouette may grow on me over time. I think for now I’ll hold off, or might try their culottes with the elastic waist. Also, can I just say that I’m really excited that Everlane shows these on all sizes and heights!

  • Reply Sheryl Helms February 15, 2017 at 10:34 am

I’ll have to say that I’m not a huge fan of the cropped, wide leg look. But you know how something looks wrong to you and then you see more and more of it and then it looks right? Who knows. . .

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:37 pm

I know that feeling exactly!!! I remember thinking that abou skinny jeans. It’s funny how that works. I say as a rule of thumb, only wear what you love!

  • Reply Madeline February 15, 2017 at 11:09 am

I got excited and ordered these the first day they were available (in two sizes!). I was worried about the length, but I love how they look on you. Out of curiosity, how tall are you?

    • Reply Andrea February 15, 2017 at 1:37 pm

Hi Madeline! I am 5’7″. Are you on the taller or shorter side?

      • Reply Madeline February 16, 2017 at 9:29 am

        I’m 5’9″ 😬

        • Reply Andrea February 16, 2017 at 11:26 am

Well I think the models are 5’10”?? I wonder if you could take the hem out and then have a raw, distressed hemline. That would be cool.

I have been eyeing these in the coming soon section as well. I still haven’t bought anything from Everlane, but these might make me finally go for it. I’m also starting my search for a cocktail/business casual dress to wear for my master’s program graduation in a few months, any suggestions for where to look online?

  • Reply Alex Chua February 19, 2017 at 6:25 am

    Andrea,
I ordered these in black based on your review, but I just want to add that if you’re thinking about the Kamm pants and can afford them, give them a try. They are hands down the most flattering pants I’ve ever worn and comfortable to boot. That’s a tall order from a woman who finds most denim uncomfortable.

    • Reply Andrea February 19, 2017 at 7:56 pm

Thanks for the tip Alex. There’s a store in Portland that has them so I may just go try them on. Good to know! Are they super tight on your waist?

      • Reply Alex Chua February 20, 2017 at 2:07 pm

I was afraid they would be tight around the waist but they are actually very comfortable. I ordered a size M, which fit really well around the hips, but had the waist taken in. Normally, I’m a size 4-6 in pants depending on the brand. X

I’m a little late to the game, but I just got a pair of these and love them! Have they faded in the wash? I know they aren’t a true, dark black to start, but I’d like to keep them as close to their original color as possible. Thank you!
