The Staple Basic Tee

2016-09-26_0009

City, family, ice cream. These are a few of my favorite things! And I’m thrilled when I add something to my closet that I can wear experiencing all the things I love. As I become increasingly selective about what I add to my wardrobe, it’s imperative that each piece of clothing works for more than one scope of my life.

Last week I walked you guys through my selection process for finding my color with Jamie + the Jones, using their awesome swatch process. Today, I’m taking the shirt I selected for a spin with the family and for a little night out.

I’ve long-admired the stunning line of tactile garments created by the duo behind Jamie + the Jones. But their recently unveiled Staple Basic collection took my obsession to a new level! Elevated basics are basically my jam. I love a shirt that can be simple and practical, or dressed up to make a gorgeous statement. These are the kind of pieces that make getting dressed easy because I can wear them almost anywhere.

This is probably the most photo-heavy post I’ve every published, but I am excited to show you how I made this top work for me, so here goes!

I love it when I can wear my ‘me’ clothes to the park rather than having to settle for ‘mom’ clothes. Raw silk is durable and washable, so I can play with my favorite threesome and not have to worry too much about snags or stains.

Sometimes, I step out of the ‘mom role’ for a night out and get to revel in the pure bliss of feeling young and carefree again! When we can snag a sitter, my husband and I love to go out for drinks or dessert. And I’m never one to pass on the opportunity for a happy hour with my lady friends, chatting, relaxing, sharing wine or IPA’s.

I love how this umber top kicks my neutrals up a notch, bringing whole new color palette possibilities to my wardrobe. Whether I’m in, out, and mommin’ or not, easy outfits are the name of my game.

How would you you style a Staple Basic Tee? And what color lipstick should I wear with this top? Spice? Brown? Neutral?

  1. This top looks great on you and I love all the pictures! I would probably try a spice lipstick…..brown is a too reminiscent of the 90’s for me, (although I know all things 90’s are back!) I would most likely style this top with skinny jeans and booties or clogs, although I would try it with my flares. (I haven’t decided if I will take my flares to consignment of see if I wear them this fall.) I love the olive and blush color of the basic tee and am trying to decide if I want to make the investment and prioritizing those things I DO spend my money on.

    1. Rebecca, what will make you wear them? Shoes? Or maybe you are trying to force it?

I agree, I loved the blush and olive too. I tagged you a week or two when J+J had their flash sale!

Good call on the spice lipstick!

      1. I wondered what that tag was about!! Bummer I missed it! Not sure why I feel so uncomfortable in flares….I wore them for years. Shoes may be part of the issue as I have a hard time with heels because of my back. I’m giving it a few more months to see if I wear them this fall.

  2. You picked the best color! It looks so gorgeous on you, especially paired with black. (And I think you should try it with berry lipstick!)

    1. I had berry on at first, but then I second-guessed! It probably didn’t help that I was using a sideview mirror and couldn’t see my shirt at the same time. Okay, gonna try that!

  3. The umber is so stunning on you! I just ordered the swatch kit, which will now make my desire for one of these gorgeous tops even harder to resist. Told myself I wouldn’t shop til Christmas, and work with my 37 item new-to-me capsule wardrobe. Finding it hard not to resist the urge to shop and have better items that I love and will last. Think I just need to embrace that this will be a process and take some time. Curious – do you own their T-top? I’m torn between the basic tee you have or that one, but not sure of how boxy it would be for when I can make this purchase :)

    1. Thank you Megan!! Good luck with your swatch kit!!

Yes, culling and curating a good wardrobe does take time. I always want to rush it too, but my results are always better when I don’t.

Yes, I do own the T-top, and I’ll be styling it on the blog soon. I loooove it! As far as a comparison between the two, it just depends what you’re looking for. The T-Top is more ‘flowy’ and has longer sleeves, the Staple Basic Tee is more like an upgraded tee. I hope that helps!

  4. Love the cut of that top! I have a maintenance question about raw silk: do you find that it sheds a little when new? I have one cream raw silk top and I love it–but when I wear them with black pants/jeans, I’ve found I’ve needed to use the lint roller a bit to get rid of the specks. I’m guessing this will mellow out once I wash it.

    1. Yes! At first it drove me nuts, but now that my raw silk (I also have one in cream) has been washed regularly, it rarely sheds. Great question!

  5. Great post! Love the way you give the tee a completely different vibe from ‘play date’ to ‘real date’. I’m wearing my T sweater right now and have a T top on the way, but after seeing your styling of this tee I think I’ll have to add one of these, too. Need to spend some time with my swatch kit first, though! 😉

    1. They have sooo many great products, right?! I have a T-top too, and it’s probably one of my most favorite shirts in my closet. I definitely have my eye on the T-sweater as well, which they are going to relaunch this fall!

    1. Great idea!

Thanks Leah! It’s surprisingly hard to shoot well in these sort of situations, but my husband did a great job! It’s much easier to just shoot regular outfit photos, ha!

  6. I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, but never commented – until today! This top is gorgeous on you, I love the color. And I definitely think a berry lip would be a fun accent :-). Also, you family is adorable! This really makes me want to step up my mom-wardrobe game. And of course, great name :-)

  7. After the last post I ordered one of their tees and this post makes me even more excited to get it. I live in a cold climate and so silk has been my go-to for base layers for awhile, but it’s tough to shop for since so much silk seems to be sold just for looks rather than function. It’s also hard to find made in the USA silk garments. It’s nice to see something that both looks good and (I hope) will make a great base layer in the winter.

    1. Yay! Excited for you Melissa! Yes, this is definitely functional silk. But it’s not silky like regular silk, it’s more textured, but still a little drapey. I really like it! I also have the T-top, and that is probably one of my favorite styles. And yes, made in the USA for the win!!

I hope your top works out!

  8. Andrea – I know this is a somewhat old post … but I’m wondering if you have any sizing notes on this style? I recently ordered the staple basic dress in small, but now I am wondering if I should have sized up to a medium so that it has a bit more drape, if that makes sense. Anyways, just wondering if you had any thoughts after wearing your staple basic tee for some months. :)

  9. HI Andrea — have you been able to fit this under a cardigan or jacket without the sleeves being too bulky? I saw your post about the Only Child top not getting bulky, but wondering if this was similar? Thanks!

    1. Hi Joy! I have this top to a friend after finding it too snug in the shoulders. But I found the sleeves fairly easy to layer over because the fabric is really soft and unstructured. Hope that helps!
