Weekly Rundown

the Weekly Rundown: the Evolution of the Style Blogger + Mom, Before She Was Mom

May 14, 2017

Seasons and salt blog

I’m pretty excited about this one: new on Cup of Jo A Week of Outfits featuring ethical brands! Melissa Lee’s style is envy-worthy and, even better, I love when she talks about how slow-fashion translates to slow-purchasing. A strategy to live by!

I signed up for Parcel after reading about it in the above link. Seems like a great way to stay organized and on-budget!

Curious about the evolution of the style blogger? It’s an industry that started out as anything but. Now some bloggers (not me!) make six-figure incomes. But is it a marketplace that has run its course? (I hope not.)

The Disease of Being Busy – how are you combating this in your own life?

If cars were suits, I am wearing an off-the-rack from Macy’s in a sea of custom-made and couture. This recent post by (my fav!) Joshua Becker extols the ‘Joys of Living Within Your Means’ and left me feeling very encouraged.

In a few weeks I’m embarking on a 30 Day/30 Items/No Shop challenge! (This includes gifted items.) I am very excited to pair down my closet for the month of June, and see what rises to the top as I work on defining my summer style. Furthermore, I am excited to take a step back from shopping and online browsing. Who wants to join me? ;)

This time last year I debuted my favorite Lou Jumpsuit, which has been an influential piece in my wardrobe. It’s given me the confidence to embrace dressing in a way I love, even if it’s different than most people.

And finally, happy Mother’s Day to all you beautiful mums out there! This beautiful piece in the NYT explores the idea of mom before she was your mom, and dares to convey our moms as we never saw them, wrestling with the concept of identity and motherhood.

Nice! I did a 30 for 30 in April – it was interesting!!

Did you learn anything about your personal style? What motivated you to try it?

      • Bobbiejean May 16, 2017 at 6:59 am

The Tiny Wardrobe Tour came through Houston back in March. I had been following Courtney for awhile but felt to constricted with just the THOUGHT of only using 30 things. After going I decided I would at least try it for April. It was funny because I didn’t even wear 1-2 things and then 2 things I only wore once! For May I gave myself access back to all my scarves, jewelry and shoes…and how many of those have I worn thus far? uh huh, you guessed it, not many. I can’t wait to see how it goes for you!!

        • Andrea May 16, 2017 at 10:26 pm

That’s crazy!! I love it though. I am excited for this experiment! It will be interesting to see how often I wear each item.

Loved the “The Disease of Being Busy” article. I am currently working on this… I feel that I’ve made progress and am happy with what I’m doing now. It really irks me when I tell someone what I’m doing on the weekend and they say “you’re so busy!” … now if I can just focus at home and do what I want and not get so sidetracked on Instagram rabbit holes lol

    • Andrea May 15, 2017 at 1:57 pm

I know what you mean, the same thing irks me too! To combat that I often give people a condensed version of what I’m up to, because sometimes things sound busier than they actually are.

And that makes two of us for the IG rabbit holes, trying to get better at that!!

I love the Cup of Jo article, especially seeing that Everlane skirt on a real person. And her directory linked in the article is impressive!!!

    • Andrea May 15, 2017 at 1:58 pm

Agreed on both counts! That skirt is sooo gorgeous! And she styled it perfectly!

  • Kim May 15, 2017 at 12:34 pm

Summer staples are definitely on my to-do list as well! I’m struggling to find the perfect summer top that will work both at my job (business casual) and as a mom. Something that can be cute and dressed up for date night. Any suggestions? I did order the Hackswith wide-leg Jumpsuit and intend on wearing that the entire summer!!!

    • Andrea May 15, 2017 at 1:46 pm

Yes! I am eyeing this top from Miranda Bennett. I’ve long loved this style from her, and I really like that it’s made from cotton. So excited for your Jumpsuit! I hope you love it x1000!

My husband and I just started a 6 month agreement to not buy anything new that’s not an absolute necessity (like food, toiletries, etc). I’m a little nervous because I get serious FOMO about potential sales on clothes that are on my short wishlist, but I know the time saved from not being online and financial the benefits of this exercise will be well worth it. It will be nice to know some of the S+S community will be joining in for 30 days. ;)

    • Andrea May 15, 2017 at 1:59 pm

Katy, that is so cool, I love it!! You make me want to do the same. Maybe if June goes well, I’ll extend to July! You should post some updates of your progress on Instagram. ;)

  • Annette Silveira May 15, 2017 at 2:25 pm

Will you be giving some guidelines for the 30 day challenge? Such as how to pick the items, what counts etc.?
I’m ready to give a challenge a try!

    • Andrea May 16, 2017 at 10:28 pm

Yes, I’ll share more on the last Weekly Rundown of the month. But in a nutshell I am picking only 30 items from my closet to wear for the entire month of June, including shoes and light jackets (but excluding rain jackets). For picking, sort your items by categories, and build your list off of what comes to the top of your mind first.

Great roundup as per usual! I really liked the busyness article and am having WAY too much fun playing with Parcel.

I’ve also been eyeing that Maxine top from ES for a few months and Melissa is making me think it’s a good idea. LOL.

    Happy belated Mother’s Day!

    • Andrea May 16, 2017 at 10:37 pm

Yes, you would rock that Maxine top. It is SO gorgeous! I could totally see it on you.

And thank you! I hope your day was good as well! xo

I would love to join you in the No Shop Challenge! I’ve made a couple of bad buys lately and I’d like to have a “cooling off” period to recover.

    • Andrea May 16, 2017 at 10:38 pm

Oh man, that’s the worst feeling, and I’ve totally been there. Cooling off sounds like a welcome reprieve. I feel like my mind has been way too consumed with shopping lately, so I’m eager to take a break too!

  • Brenda May 17, 2017 at 11:26 am

I have been trying hard to pare down my wardrobe and only wear things I absolutely love, in addition to trying to buy pieces from ethical manufacturers. I don’t mind spending a little more money if it is something that I think I will wear a lot and that will last a long time. That said though, I struggle because sometimes you need to wear something a couple of times to know whether it works or not! Just because it is well-made and made-ethically, doesn’t mean it will work for you. And usually by the time I figure that out, it can’t be returned. I have so many grey, black and white t-shirts that were meant to be basic, foundation pieces it is crazy! Then I really feel like I am wasting money.

    • Andrea May 18, 2017 at 11:23 am

I feel you Brenda! It is so aggravating to realize I’ve dropped some serious cash on something that doesn’t work. I know, I wish there was a way to know whether something truly was a good fit before you left the house in it. I have found that any time I’m in doubt, then the answer often ends up being no. It’s just really hard to listen to that doubt when I want something to work out!
