the Weekly Rundown: Is Madewell Ripping Off Small Businesses?

October 8, 2017

Seasons and salt blog

How is your 10×10 going? I’m really enjoying seeing the posts on Instagram. There are almost too many to keep up with! If you have a blog and are participating in the Fall 10×10, feel free to leave a link in the comments so we can check it out. Love seeing Jaana’s and Marloes’ picks!

Thoroughly impressed by these self-made wide leg pants (and the styling).

Stylish, yet still staying warm.

Is Madewell copycatting small makers? These look suspiciously similar to this cult favorite by Portland-based Seaworthy.

Have you guys seen the new Chore Coat (affiliate link) by Tradlands? I’m sort of obsessed. I’ll be styling one for the blog next month, stay tuned!

And finally…

… are you unwittingly giving fear power in your life?

Madewell has been problematic for awhile because a lot of their designs rip off indigenous Mexican embroidery.

Totally unrelated, that Chore Coat is great.

I think that big earrings are very trendy right now, and the Madwell pair is different *enough* that Seaworthy probably cannot say it’s an infringement. I’m probably speaking more out of guilt because I bought a different pair of bigger earrings to see how my ears could handle them before I drop $100+ on an independently designed pair. :-/

I’ve been eyeing the chore coat in black, but I’m worried the shoulders will be too narrow versus the body. What size did you go with? Can’t wait for the full post!

Oh man, Lindsey, you’re like my shoulder twin! I decided to opt for the medium! It won’t ship till the end of this month, so fingers crossed. I’ll definitely let you know!

Yes yes yes about madewell (and quite a few others). They have been closely copying small makers for years! I notice it particularly with jewelry because I am a jeweler and am fairly aware of what’s going on in the jewelry world. It makes me so sad because they have the money and power to collaborate but choose to copy instead.

On a positive note, love the post about fear, and can’t wait to see that Chore Coat on you!

That’s such a great point. They totally could collaborate, instead they are ripping off artists. It’s terrible! I noticed that they seem to be copying Maraias and MNZ with some of their new heels. Such a bummer!
