Some weeks when I get dressed, it comes together very easily. And then some weeks, I struggle. The latter was definitely the case this week. I don’t know if it’s the weather, or the impending daily photo, but I struggled quite a bit with building outfits and ended up with a few days that were not my favorites.
I also saw a color palette emerge: black, blue, tan and cream. If I had to distill my wardrobe down, these would definitely be the most utilized colors. I have quickly learned from these weekly recaps that cream/oatmeal is my most favorite color to wear. Four out of seven days this week I wore it! Should make future purchasing decisions a snap, right? ;)
SUNDAY:

I did not love this outfit. Earlier in the day, I was wearing my favorite mules, which I thought completed this look nicely. When the rain came, I switched out for more waterproof shoes and it kind of broke up the look. I think if I had switched out for a gray bag, I would be more pleased with the overall ensemble.
MONDAY:

It was so cold and rainy that I busted some of my boots back out. It was the first time pairing them with these newly-cropped jeans, and I love the way they came together. The boots have a tall enough shaft to keep my ankles warm and the jeans are cropped enough to show off the boots. I suspect this will be a great combo for me in the fall/winter months.
It’s playing peek-a-boo, but I am also wearing my favorite layering necklace, this half-moon shape by Loop Jewelry (c/o).
TUESDAY:

It wouldn’t be a week without my dancing pants. No really, these pants perk up any day I wear them because they feel.so.good. I really liked the simplicity of the long-sleeved cream top tucked in plus the boots. The only challenge with these pants is outerwear. Raincoats and most coats often look strange, so I usually alternate between my jean jacket and leather jacket.
WEDNESDAY:

Today I busted out my first jumpsuit love, this number by REIFhaus. I am not sure I did this outfit justice with my photograph. Or maybe it is just that the shoes don’t work. Previously, I’ve worn this jumpsuit with high tops, mules or boots and have been happy with the outcome. Sidenote: I’m considering letting out the 3/4″ seam allowance for a slightly longer leg. It’s hard to find jumpsuits for tall girls!
THURSDAY:

The classics always win! I love this look. This sweatshirt is part of my original order from Everlane, so it’s seen quite a few wears by now, and I still love it! It was the start of my shift toward really paying attention to what I bought and how I dressed. I truly feel like there is a lot of peace that emerges from discovering and landing on your own personal style. There is far less nomadic shopping or desire to follow every trend.
Also, this spot has some of the best light in my house (and probably more importantly, the least clutter!). That’s why you see it so much in my photos!
FRIDAY:
A photo did not happen on this day because a lot of other crazy stuff did. I had my first kid break a bone. (Yikes!) She’s going to be fine, but needless to say, the day got away from me. However, I did have some interesting observations before the day went sideways.
Earlier in the day, I was wearing my favorite vintage jeans (of course), the same cream sweater as Monday, and my white Cons. Then, when it was time to head in for school pickup, I threw on my olive jacket (seen last week), and I really liked how it all came together, except I got to school and there was a mom dressed exactly like me. Even down to the shade and crop of the jeans. Except her white tennies were Jack Purcells. I felt like I was on Candid Camera or something and everybody was staring. Of course they weren’t, but it still felt a little uncomfortable to me. Sometimes I have this weird inner drive to dress completely different from everyone else. I’m sure there’s some psychological reason behind it that I haven’t yet discovered.
SATURDAY:

Saturday I felt like I was lounging in pajamas (weekend goals, right?). I tried wearing this jumpsuit reversed, but it turns out the neckline is a little tight on me. So v-forward it shall remain. This time I ditched the belt, and it was fun to wear such a loose and soft outfit. It kind of makes going back to real pants a little hard!
I’m loving this new format!! And you and I have similar coloring, I think. Your color palette is one I often reach for as well. In fact I’m wearing it today!

On a work trip to the east coast a couple of years ago, I got some tops from LOFT on sale (this was before I was more educated about the fashion industry). So anyway, I took them along feeling pretty good about myself. Mind you, these weren’t even neutrals, they all had prints and colors, and ‘seemed’ unique. On a Wednesday, a colleague of mine from the same team and I, , ended up wearing the same blouse! I was mortified, and the entire office noticed immediately. What followed was some good -natured ribbing, We both had a good laugh about it, and decided to walk around together the whole day, getting a kick out of people’s immediate reactions. Its all good!
I love ALL your outfits here, and my fav will have to be the one with the Mara tunic. I’m going to put those Shooties on my wishlist for fall :D

I love Sunday’s outfit! The collarless dress plays really well with the exaggerated collar of the leather jacket. I also love both of the jumpsuits. I was so hesitant about my Lou jumpsuit when I first got it, but now I love it and wear it weekly. AND I get loads of compliments on it. Win-win. Love the new format. You’re making me reconsider those blush oxfords. I sent them back last year because they felt so pointy, but I love them on you.
Thanks Mel! I think I am just settling into how much I like (or don’t like) this leather jacket. Something is hitting me funny about it, and I can’t quite tell what. I totally feel where you are coming from with wanting to be different / unique in your look. This is something I’ve thought about a lot as while I love minimalistic fashion I still look for characteristics in clothes that stand out or feel unique.
Something I’ve thought about doing lately is simply having my clothes altered to include the kind of details I like. I lean towards an edgier look so rather than scrouging the internet for ethically made clothes with specific details I like!
For example, I want a pair of great minimal ponte pants (cecilia pants pls come back) but I would also love of they had zippers at the ankle for a coolness factor.

Yes! I had them waterproofed professionally but there is so much rain, as you must know as a Portlander, that I still worry about them.
I have two different frye boots and needed protective, grippy soles put on each. Beautiful shoes, but very sleek, slippery bottoms :)

I have mostly neutrals in my closet year round (white, grey, navy, black) and then a few pieces each season with pops of color (spring – bright pink and bright blue, summer – red, fall – brown and maroon, winter – emerald and plum). I love basics but it is nice to still be be able to spice things up if I want!
Yes, I think this is such a smart way to do it! It really gives life and variety to the rest of the closet, and probably helps you from going overboard or getting ‘style confused.’

We’re finally purchasing a house after years of moving around and I’m SO tempted to reduce, reduce, reduce. It’s weird because you would think that I’d be less inclined to do so since we will have the space to store things, but that’s not how I’m feeling at all. This outfit in particular reminds me that we only need very little to feel wholly ourselves. Any advice on what to keep or let go off (home wise) since you moved recently too?
I would keep it all until you get in your new space, and give yourself a few months to arrange and re-arrange your items. I feel like spaces need to be lived in before you can decorate them well. The longer I’ve been here the better I’ve gotten at arranging things. And for me decorating doesn’t mean buying more things, it actually has been more about subtracting things! For example, after we moved into our room, we downsized to one dresser and got rid of an older, dark mirror, and our room feels so much more spacious and cohesive now. Congratulations on your new home!!

Hi Kim! I am 5’7. I know what you mean about jumpers! Some are meant to be cropped, and some ankle-grazing. I think it just comes down to what you love best. :)
Really love this series! I love Tuesdays wide leg pants look on you, but I gravitate towards Saturday’s look too just cause that looks like something I’d feel comfortable in. Yikes about the broken bone- hope your little is on the mend!

My favourite look was Thursday which is surprising since I hardly wear jeans and white/cream is not a colour I’ve had but added it to try out. Hmm, that’s a tough one! I like the HDH because it has the option for a tie. Perhaps you’ll have to consider having one hemmed if you buy one. It’s so worth it though! Jumpsuits are such playful and easy pieces to wear! :)
I like all of these. My favorite is Thursday. I am also pro letting down the hem on the REIFhaus jumpsuit. I am finding ankle length as opposed to cropped my new favorite pant length. At least for me.

I love the simpleness of Thursday and Monday’s outfits. Both are something I would wear, and actually do have similar pieces in my closet. Lovin’ the hair, too. I finally cut mine this week and it is a tad shorter than yours, but basically the same cut. I love it, even though my hair hasn’t been this short since 2004. Glad to hear your daughter is on the mend!

Very easy. Salt spray on lazy days and using a large barreled curling iron when I want it to look a bit more pulled together. So much better than the messy bun that was constantly in my hair before. :-)

Great question, I have/had both pairs of shoes. I prefer the blush oxfords for 1) their ability to handle the rain (it rains a lot here) and 2) I like the longer, almond shape toe. However, Nisolo has a new style of oxfords that look reallllly good! I am considering the black ones for fall. I liked my Oliver oxfords quite a bit, and the fit is a little more comfortable out of the box, but I just wasn’t wearing them very much, so I sold them. Hope that helps!
